WHAT IS PUBLIC DOMAIN SOFTWARE?

Public Domain (P.D.) software is usually not copyrighted. Public Domain
programs may be freely used and copied by anyone. Often the author has
written the program for his own use and just wants to share it with other
Atari users like yourself. Sometimes a program written for the commercial
market will instead be released in the Public Domain. Because it’s unprotected,
you are free to enhance and modify it to your heart’s content.

WHAT IS SHAREWARE?

"Shareware" or "User-supported" software is copyrighted, however, the author
permits his program to be freely distributed in order that you may try it out. If
you enjoy the program and continue using it on a regular basis, you are
expected to voluntarily pay a registration fee (usually $5 to SI 5) directly to
the program’s author. As a registered owner you will often receive a printed
manual, technical support, and possibly an updated version of the program.
The author’s name, address, and the payment requested, is shown in the
program’s opening screen. Sometimes no lee is expected, but it’s still a nice
gesture to write the author and express your appreciation. Now that
commercial 8-bit software is becoming scarce, BELLCOM encourages you to

WHAT IS A THEME DISK?

BELLCOM Theme Disks contain individually tested Public Domain and
Shareware programs. Some disks may contain a single huge program package,
while other disks are literally pacied with smaller programs carefully
organized by subject matter. All programs listed in connection with a Theme
Disk are contained on that disk and are Included in the disk’s low price. The
result? Each disk is packed full of value!

some Public Domain and Shareware
authors are known the world over.

library, so please check our catalogue
first. Also, we do not require further
AMS music files. Movie Maker files,
pinball games, or Computer Gourmet
data disks. Original games, utilities,
graphics, and useful home and busi-
ness programs are generally most in
demand. New Koala art and Com-
puterEyes digitized images are
accepted only if they are of excep-
tional quality and unique.

IMPORTANT

Submitted software must be in the
Public Domaia as we will not accept
any pirated commercial software or
copyrighted programs that have been
published in computer magazines!
Also, submitted software must meet
the BELLCOM standard of quality
and good taste. Programs should be
bug-free and be accompanied with
documentation files if required.

DISK INSTRUCTIONS

ARE BELLCOM THEME DISKS COMPATIBLE WITH MY SYSTEM?

Our Theme Disks come in standard single-sided single-density formal and are guaranteed to load on any Atari 8-bit
system. Although some Theme Disks are double-sided, these are not true double-sided disks and are known in the
trade as "flippies". This is because they must be turned (fUpped) over in order to access the second side even when a
double-sided drive is used. A few of the older Atari 400/800 programs require a "Translator" program to run on the
newer XL/XE models, and some programs, especially those written in T urbo Basic, will only run on XL/XE models. The
catalogue will inform you of a program's requirements.

WHAT’S A TRANSLATOR PROGRAM?

The newer Atari XL/XE computers have a slightly different operating system than the older Atari 400/800 computers
have. As a result, some software written for the 400/800 will not run on the XL/XE "Translator" programs reconfigure
the XL/XEs operating system to that of the older 400/800 models and allow the software to run. To use them, first Toad
the T ranslator. then change disks and load the desired program. If you wish to load a non-BASIC program, remember
to hold down the XL/XEs [OPTION] key while loading the Translator in order to disengage BASIC. Translator
programs are available from the Utilities section of this catalogue. Every XL/XE owner should have a Translator
program You never know when you may need one.

HOW DO I RUN THEME DISKS?

Insert the Theme Disk in your drive and switch on your computer. It's just that simple. Many Theme Disks will display
a special BELLCOM MENU that allows you select and load the individual programs. To use it simply press [SELECT)
or [OPTION] to scroll the colorful cursor line to the desired program and press [START] to begia Run the
"HELP .DOC* file for instructions. To load another program, simply switch off the computer and reload the MENU.

WHAT IF I HAVE PROBLEMS?

You shouldn't have any problems, however, if you get a "BOOT ERROR" message it could mean that the disk has been
corrupted in the mail. If the prograpn loads and then "freezes" or displays garbage on the screen, check the programs
description in the catalogue. It could be that it’s a machine language (ML) program and you must remove BASIC prior
to loading or, if you have an XL/XE model, you may have to use a Translator. Game programs will sometimes wait for
joystick input And occasionally, a machine language program can only be loaded from DOS using the BINARY LOAD
option (bool DOS without BASIC from a separate work disk then insert your Theme Disk).

Experiment and be sure to read any documentation (DOC) files provided. Finally, if you try everything and you’re still
stuck, were ready to assist you.
